Last month, a delegation of 40 managers from Estonian water companies, organized by EVEL (Estonian Waterworks Association), visited the Netherlands as part of the PoVE Water professional training program. This visit, spanning several days, was a tremendous success, fostering deeper international collaboration and knowledge exchange between water professionals from Estonia and the Netherlands, particularly focusing on sludge management practices.
Key Highlights from the Visit
The trip began with an insightful visit to the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Garmerwolde, operated by Waterboard Noorderzijlvest. Here, the delegation learned about innovative sludge handling techniques that improve the efficiency of wastewater operations. The plant showcased unique approaches to minimize sludge production, enhance treatment processes, and explore sustainable disposal methods. This firsthand experience provided valuable insights that the Estonian managers are eager to implement back home.
On the second day, the group visited Vitens, a leading drinkwater company. This visit highlighted the critical role of effective sludge management in water production and quality control. The Estonian delegation gained a closer look at how the Netherlands integrates advanced technologies and practices to manage sludge, ensuring both environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
After a networking lunch at the WaterCampus in Leeuwarden, the Estonian water managers attended presentations from WaterCampus partners, focusing on innovative research and technologies related to sludge management. They also explored the campus facilities, which serve as a hub for water technology and sparked great interest in potential collaborative projects.
Cultural Exchange
To cap off their trip, the Estonian delegation enjoyed a scenic boat tour through the picturesque canals of Leeuwarden. This informal setting facilitated conversations and cultural exchanges, strengthening personal and professional ties between participants while allowing for discussions on sludge management strategies in a relaxed atmosphere.
A Path Towards Future Collaboration
This visit marks a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between EVEL and PoVE Water, with a particular emphasis on improving sludge management practices. Participants expressed enthusiasm for the program, and many have already begun to incorporate insights and strategies learned during the trip into their practices in Estonia.
PoVE Water continues to strengthen the European water sector by fostering international exchanges that focus on crucial issues like sludge management, enabling professionals to share best practices and advance their expertise.
